The American Civil War! |
The American Civil War was at once the most glorious and most tragic years in the history of the United States. Slavery was not the overall cause of the war, but it raised deep constitutional, economic and moral issues which caused bitter divisions in the American society. (Ellis, Keith) The Civil War began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate artillery shelled Fort Sumter in the harbour of Charlston, South Carolina. It ended four years later. On April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his exhausted army to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. The other Confederate forces surrendered shortly afterwards. |
