Petersburg: Grant advanced on to Petersburg, a railroad centre south of Richmond. All the railroads that supplied Richmond came through Petersburg. If Grant could seize these, Lee would be forced into a fight in the open. In order to achieve his aim, Grant supervised the building of one of the longest (610m) continuous pontoon bridges in the history of warfare. Grant would have succeeded but for a small Confederate force under Beauregard which fended him off until Lee arrived. Grant's men dug trenches around the city, and Lee's tired men did the same. The famous siege of Petersburg started on June 20 and went on for nine long months. The Union troops tried many times to crack the defences but the Confederates stood firm. |
